Everyone seems to live in a box that they fit pretty well into. They hold similar values, have similar likes and dislikes, dress similarly, the list just continues. But then, there are some of us who do not seem to fit it any of these boxes. How are we to find ourselves? We grow up with certain stereotypes about gender, race, religion, class, etc. and then, one day, if we go off that stereotypical path, you no longer know what you identify with. At that point, where do you turn?
In an age where the internet is supposed to hold all answers, some of the hardest questions in life cannot be answered by the internet. In those instances, we begin to turn to things like religion and mentors. But, even those don’t hold all the answers. Not to turn this into a religious conversation, but for example, the Bible teaches us to have faith in God and let him lead our paths, to not second guess where he intends for us to go. Some people begin to take this to an extreme and end up going no where. There is a fine line between not questioning, but still following the thoughts that are your guidance.
What makes us “us” is all of the little details about us; our fashion choices, religious choices, values, careers, etc. So say you have one or two of the boxes checked off, where do you turn for the remaining answers?
This is still a question I ponder on often. After a divorce in a society that sees divorce as rather taboo no matter the reason, I have quite frankly lost myself. I no longer can identify me as the person I worked so hard on my entire life. There is so much noise in this world that you just get lost in. I guess one of the ways to begin finding those answers is by redefining your purpose and working backwards.
